Q: How to judge the positive and negative of the film capacitor?
A: Film capacitors are not polarized - they can be applied in AC circuits, and certain types (such as polycarbonate or polypropylene capacitors) can be used in high frequency or radio frequency applications.
However, some film capacitors do have "outer foil" markings (stripes or bars). This shows which terminal is electrically connected to the outermost foil layer of the capacitor roll. In noise-sensitive or high-impedance circuits, the outer foil will be preferentially connected to the ground part of the circuit to minimize stray electric field noise. Although not "polarized" in the sense of electrolytic capacitors, these capacitors should be oriented correctly in noise sensitive amplifiers and radio equipment.
Q: How about the safety of film capacitors?
A: Because the conductive dielectric is coated on a transparent film or sandwiched between two films, the withstand voltage is very high, generally 600 volts DC, 300 volts AC. If there is no liquid, it will not cause a gas explosion, which is very safe.
