Combination of Varistors and Fuses in the Circuit

Feb. 20, 2023

Each electronic product is composed of different electronic components. Without one of them, the electronic product cannot operate normally. The most common problem encountered by electronic products during work is overvoltage.

In the circuit, due to improper parameter coordination or external factors, part of the voltage in the circuit rises, exceeding the value under normal conditions, which is overvoltage. There are varistors and fuses in electronics to handle overvoltage situations like this.

The varistor is an electronic component with nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics. Its function is to clamp the voltage when the circuit voltage is too large to withstand, and will absorb the excess current in the circuit to protect the subsequent circuit and electronic components.

Combination of Varistors and Fuses in the Circuit

Like building a house, the foundation must be laid before the height of the house can be determined. The role of the varistor in the circuit is also very important. If the varistor is not used, the circuit will fail due to excessive voltage, causing the electronic components on the circuit to not work normally, which will affect the operation of electrical appliances, and will also damage the circuit and electrical appliances.

The fuse acts as overcurrent protection in the circuit, and can also be called short circuit protection. When the circuit fails or is abnormal, the fuse will automatically blow and cut off the current, which will protect the subsequent circuit and electronic components to a certain extent.

When the circuit fails, the current increases and the temperature rises, which will damage the electronic components on the circuit, and even cause a fire in severe cases. Therefore, when the current of the circuit increases, the fuse will automatically blow, and the current will be cut off, and will not flow to the subsequent circuit, which will protect the subsequent circuit and electronic components. When the overcurrent disappears, the fuse will automatically reconnect and the circuit will resume normal operation. So that's why fuses are used in the circuit.

In the circuit, the varistor is used together with the fuse to protect the circuit when it is affected by lightning or overvoltage, and it is used for transient voltage protection in the circuit. When the circuit is over-voltage, the varistor will be broken down and present a short-circuit state, thereby clamping the voltage at both ends at a lower level. The over-current caused by the short-circuit will automatically blow the fuse, forcibly cut off the power supply, and protect the subsequent circuit and electronic component.

This is why in the circuit, the varistor and the fuse are used together to protect the circuit.
