How to Read the Parameters of a Thermistor

Nov. 06, 2023

A thermistor is a special electronic component that is sensitive to temperature. Its resistance value varies at different temperatures, making it a useful tool for temperature measurement. In the electronics industry, thermistors are widely used in temperature measurement, control, and circuit protection.

Thermistors can be categorized into two types based on their temperature coefficients: Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors and Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors.

How to Read the Parameters of a Thermistor

The "NTC" on the NTC 5D-9 thermistor in the diagram stands for Negative Temperature Coefficient thermistor, which means its resistance increases as the temperature decreases.

The "5" on the NTC 5D-9 thermistor indicates the rated zero-power resistance value, which is 5 ohms (Ω).

As per standard specifications, the rated zero-power resistance value is the resistance of the NTC thermistor at the reference temperature of 25°C. This resistance value is the nominal resistance value of the NTC thermistor, which means that at 25°C, the NTC 5D-9 thermistor has a nominal resistance of 5Ω.

The "D" on the NTC 5D-9 thermistor stands for "DISK," indicating that it has a disk-like appearance.

The "9" on the NTC 5D-9 thermistor indicates the diameter of the thermistor, which means the NTC 5D-9 thermistor has a diameter of 9 millimeters. Apart from 9 millimeters, thermistors with diameters of 5 millimeters, 7 millimeters, and 11 millimeters are also available for selection.

Is a larger thermistor diameter better? Not necessarily. When selecting a thermistor model, it's important to consider the actual circuit requirements and available space.

In this example, we used the NTC 5D-9 thermistor to explain how to understand the silk screen parameters of a thermistor, which can be a useful reference when purchasing thermistors.
