Is It Normal for Film Capacitors to Be Noisy

Sep. 17, 2021

With the development of technology, the replacement cycle of electronics, home appliances, communications and electronic products in other industries is getting shorter and shorter. With its good electrical performance and high reliability, film capacitors have become indispensable electronic components to promote the replacement of these industries.

Someone may wonder why noise occurs during the use of film capacitors. Is this normal? Read this article to find out the answer.

Normally, there is a little noise in film capacitors, but the noise of inferior film capacitors will be more pronounced. What is the reason?

Because there are gaps between the capacitor dielectric film layers, the film periodically deforms under the action of electromagnetic force, which causes the film to resonate. The noise of the resonance is what we call the noise of film capacitors. Under normal circumstances, the noise of film capacitors is extremely small and cannot be heard at all. However, when a high-frequency voltage is applied to the capacitor, due to the action of the charge force between the two electrodes, the film will be mechanically vibrated to produce sound, but in general, this sound has no effect on the electrical performance.

Inferior film capacitors will produce significant noise:

If the noise is significant, it is likely that you have bought inferior film capacitors and the service life will be very short. Normal high-quality metalized films, their film thickness is very uniform, the surface is very smooth, so that the produced film capacitor noise is relatively small. In order to reduce production costs, inferior film capacitors can only use low-cost and inferior film materials. The film thickness is uneven, the surface is uneven and rough, and there are a lot of burrs. Capacitors produced by using inferior film will produce louder noise.

The capacitor core is the essential cause of noise:

Ideally, there is no air inside the capacitor core. The quality-guaranteed film capacitor will completely exhaust the air inside the core through vacuum hot pressing. And a dust-free, constant temperature, and constant humidity production workshop will ensure that there is very little humid air inside the capacitor core, therefore the noise of the film capacitor will be significantly lower and smaller. However, in order to save costs, some inferior film capacitors do not use vacuum heat pressing, and the moist air in the film capacitor core is not completely exhausted, which causes the noise of the film capacitor to become louder when it is used.

After reading the content of this article, you should have an idea of why film capacitors produce noise. In short, the noise of film capacitors comes from the presence of air inside the capacitor core. Therefore, when choosing a film capacitor, we must first chose a reliable manufacturer, so as to reduce unnecessary troubles.
