The Role of NTC Thermistors in Electric Cars

May. 31, 2024

With the increasing number of cars on the road, the issues of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions have become significant concerns. Traditional cars use gasoline, a non-renewable energy source, and the exhaust gases they emit are harmful, polluting the air and damaging public health.

In response to these problems, new energy vehicles (NEVs) have emerged. NEVs rely on electricity and batteries as their primary power sources, offering benefits such as reduced pollution, enhanced energy efficiency, and environmental protection.

Electric cars are a prime example of new energy vehicles. These cars utilize power batteries for propulsion. Within the electronic control system of NEVs, sensors play a crucial role. These sensors, particularly temperature sensors, are essential for measuring and monitoring temperature to ensure the electronic systems of the vehicle function correctly and avoid damage from excessive temperature variations.

The Role of NTC Thermistors in Electric Cars

Several types of temperature sensors are commonly used, including thermocouple sensors, thermistor sensors, platinum resistance sensors, and integrated temperature sensors. Among these, thermistor sensors are frequently employed in new energy vehicles. A thermistor is a resistor made from semiconductor ceramic material that is highly sensitive to temperature changes. The resistance of a thermistor varies with temperature, and based on the temperature coefficient, they are classified into Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors and Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors.

NTC thermistors, in particular, are valued for their accurate temperature measurement, low cost, small size, and high sensitivity. In new energy vehicles, NTC thermistors are primarily used for:

  • Temperature control of air conditioners

  • Fuel heating management

  • Monitoring brake fluid levels

These applications ensure that the various systems in electric cars operate efficiently and safely, contributing to the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle.
