Differences Between 10D 471K and 20D 471K Varistors

Feb. 18, 2024

Varistors are special electronic components whose resistance changes with the applied voltage. In circuits, varistors are mainly used for overvoltage protection, absorbing transient overvoltages to protect circuits from damage.

Varistors come in many different models, each with different purposes and functions. So, what are the differences between the similar models 10D 471K and 20D 471K?

When studying varistors, you often see screen printing on them. These screen parameters are important for selecting varistors, so it's important to understand and be familiar with the screen parameters on varistors.

In the 10D 471K and 20D 471K varistor models, the numbers 10 and 20 represent the diameter of the varistor chip, which is 10mm and 20mm, respectively. All other values are the same. The 20D varistor is larger than the 10D one, requiring more raw materials, silver surfaces, and epoxy powder for encapsulation. Therefore, the unit price of the 20D varistor is higher than that of the 10D varistor.

Differences Between 10D 471K and 20D 471K Varistors

In addition to the above differences, there are other differences between the 10D 471K and 20D 471K varistor models:

Rated Power

The rated power of a varistor refers to the peak power it can withstand under specified conditions. Rated power is an important indicator of varistor performance, determining its energy absorption capacity.

Varistors with larger diameters have higher rated power. The rated power of the 20D 471K varistor is higher than that of the 10D 471K varistor, allowing it to absorb more energy.

Response Speed

The response speed of a varistor refers to the speed at which its resistance changes when subjected to overvoltage. Varistors with faster response speeds provide better protection.

Generally, varistors with larger diameters have faster response speeds because their larger size allows them to sense changes in overvoltage more quickly. Therefore, the response speed of the 20D 471K varistor is better than that of the 10D 471K varistor.

Accuracy

The accuracy of a varistor refers to the range of error in its resistance value. Varistors with higher accuracy have more stable performance. In addition to diameter and rated voltage, there may also be differences in accuracy between the 10D 471K and 20D 471K varistors.

The 10D 471K and 20D 471K varistors differ in rated power, response speed, accuracy, and other aspects. In practical applications, it is necessary to choose the appropriate varistor model according to the specific working environment and requirements to ensure the normal operation and reliability of the circuit.

Moreover, it is important to note that the performance of varistors from different manufacturers and brands may vary. Choosing reputable manufacturers and brands is also an important factor in ensuring varistor performance.
