Routine Inspection and Repair of Capacitors

Sep. 04, 2023

In this technologically advanced era, capacitors play an indispensable role. In our daily lives, we encounter situations such as capacitor open circuits, breakdowns, leakage, and electrical conduction issues. How can we respond quickly to these situations? This article compiles some simple and efficient methods for your convenience.

Component Open Circuit

After a capacitor experiences an open circuit, it loses its functionality. Different circuit capacitors exhibit varying specific fault phenomena when encountering open circuit issues. For example, an open circuit in a filtering capacitor results in AC noise, while a coupling capacitor open circuit leads to silence.

Component Breakdown

After a capacitor undergoes breakdown, it loses its functionality. A pathway is created between the two pins of the capacitor, nullifying its DC insulation function. This leads to faults in the DC circuit of the circuit, thereby affecting the AC operational state.

Routine Inspection and Repair of Capacitors

Component Leakage

During capacitor leakage, the insulation performance between the two polar plates of the capacitor deteriorates. Leakage resistance exists between the two plates, allowing DC current to flow through the capacitor. This results in a decline in the capacitor's DC insulation performance and its capacitance. When a coupling capacitor leaks, it causes significant circuit noise. This type of fault is more common in small capacitors and is difficult to detect.

Breakdown After Powering On

When a capacitor breaks down after being subjected to operating voltage, it may not exhibit signs of breakdown after being powered off. It might not display breakdown characteristics when tested with a multimeter. When measured under powered conditions, the DC voltage across the terminals of the capacitor is zero or very low, indicating deteriorated capacitor performance.

Repair Methods:

For internal capacitor open circuits, replace the component. For external wiring open circuits, re-solder the connections.

Replace the capacitor if it has experienced breakdown.

Replace the capacitor if it is leaking.

Replace the capacitor if it breaks down after being powered on.
