Many systems require backup power. We often think about how to choose the storage medium for backup power. Which is more suitable when it comes to storing energy? Supercapacitor or batterie? Hopefully this article will give you the answer.


A great deal of research and development has taken place over the past decade, resulting in significant advances in capacitor design and capacitance. Ultracapacitors are compact and robust enough to meet the requirements of backup power systems for short-term power loss events. In addition, supercapacitors can easily be stacked in parallel or in series, and in a series-parallel combination, the final application provides the necessary voltage and current.

However, supercapacitors are not just capacitors with large capacitance values. Compared to standard ceramic, tantalum, or electrolytic capacitors, supercapacitors have higher energy density and larger capacitance for the same size and weight. While supercapacitors require special maintenance, they surpass or can replace batteries in data storage applications that require high current/short-term backup power.


Ultracapacitors can also be used in a variety of high peak power and portable applications that require high burst currents or short battery backup, such as UPS systems. Compared to batteries, supercapacitors provide higher burst peak power in a smaller size, with more charge cycles and a wider operating temperature range. The lifetime of supercapacitors can be maximized by reducing the supercapacitor’s upper cut-off voltage and avoiding high temperatures (> 50°C).


Batteries, on the other hand, can store large amounts of energy, but have limitations in power density and delivery. Chemical reactions take place inside the battery, so it has a limited number of charge cycles. Therefore, if the right amount of power is to be delivered over a longer period of time, the battery is efficient, and making the battery output a large current quickly can severely shorten its useful life.
