Electronic products are essential in modern life and rely on electrical energy to operate. Besides wall power supplies and batteries, supercapacitors also provide energy for electronics.
Supercapacitors are a new type of energy storage device, falling between traditional capacitors and batteries. They combine the power density of capacitors with the energy density of batteries.
Supercapacitors feature fast charge/discharge, high power density, long service life, and can endure hundreds of thousands of cycles, making them widely used in various applications.
When selecting a supercapacitor, you might notice markings like “5.5V/4F” or “2.7V–8F” on the casing. These numbers and letters convey important specifications:
“V” = Rated Voltage
“2.7V” indicates the peak voltage the supercapacitor can withstand under normal operating conditions.
Exceeding this voltage can cause electrolyte decomposition, electrode damage, leakage, bulging, or even explosion. Always ensure the applied voltage does not exceed the rated value.
“F” = Capacitance
“8F” represents a capacitance of 8 farads, describing how much charge the supercapacitor can store.
Capacitors with farad-level ratings can store significantly more energy than standard capacitors, which are usually rated in microfarads (µF).
A supercapacitor marked “90F” has even higher energy storage capacity than an 8F capacitor.
Understanding the rated voltage and capacitance of a supercapacitor makes it easier to choose the right one for your application.
