In our daily lives, temperature is a crucial parameter. Whether it's a rice cooker, air conditioner, refrigerator, or thermometer, all these devices rely on accurate temperature measurement. Among them, thermistors often play the role of temperature sensors, helping us gauge the temperature.
Thermistors are compact, quick to respond, and very convenient to use. However, sometimes we may encounter issues where the temperature readings they provide are inaccurate, with large deviations. So, what could be the reason behind this? Let's take a closer look.
1. What is a Thermistor?
A thermistor is an electronic component that is highly sensitive to temperature. Made from semiconductor materials, its resistance changes with temperature variations. By measuring the change in resistance, we can determine the current temperature.
Due to their high sensitivity, accuracy, wide operating temperature range, and small size, thermistors are used in many devices to measure temperature. However, while thermistors are theoretically accurate, real-world usage may lead to some temperature measurement errors.
2. Why Do Thermistors Sometimes Provide Inaccurate Temperature Readings?
Thermistor Temperature is Too High
When a thermistor operates, current flows through it, and the heat generated by this current can raise the thermistor's temperature. This self-generated heat can make the thermistor measure a temperature higher than the actual ambient temperature, resulting in errors.
Improper Installation
Thermistors need to be placed close to the object being measured and should maintain proper contact. If installed incorrectly, the temperature the thermistor senses may differ from the actual temperature.
Improper Calibration
Before use, thermistors need to be calibrated according to standard temperature-resistance charts. If calibration is not performed properly, or if the calibration method is inaccurate, the measurement results will be biased.
Thermistor Aging
Over time, thermistors may experience aging, causing their resistance values to drift, which can lead to inaccurate temperature readings.
In summary, the reasons for thermistor temperature measurement errors are often related to factors like its operating environment, installation method, calibration process, and usage duration. Proper installation and regular maintenance can help reduce these errors and ensure more accurate temperature readings.
