Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, electric double-layer capacitors, gold capacitors, and farad capacitors, are electrochemical components developed from the 1970s and 1980s to store energy through polarized electrolytes. When battery is mentioned, people will aslo think of supercapacitors because they both can store energy. This article will tell you what the characteristics of supercapacitors compared to batteries.
Compared with batteries, super capacitors have the following characteristics:
1) Ultra-low series equivalent resistance (ESR), the power density is dozens of times that of lithium-ion batteries, suitable for high current discharge.
2) Long service life, able to be charged and discharged more than 500,000 times, which is 500 times that of lithium-ion batteries and 1,000 times that of nickel-metal hydride and nickel-cadmium batteries. If the super capacitor is charged and discharged 20 times a day, it can be used continuously for 68 years.
3) It can be charged with high current, the charging and discharging time is short, the requirements for the charging circuit are simple, and there is no memory effect. The charging of the supercapacitor is a physical process of charging and discharging of the electric double layer or a fast and reversible chemical process on the surface of the electrode material. Supercapacitor supports large current charging, the charging process only takes tens of seconds to minutes. While batteries take hours to charge, fast charging also takes some time.
4) Wide temperature range -40～+70℃.
5) Small size, compact shape, easy installation, space saving, maintenance-free, and sealable.
6) Can be stored in a discharged state, while overdischarge is harmful to many rechargeable batteries;
7) Safe, convenient, green and environmentally friendly use.
