Super Capacitor or Battery for UPS

Oct. 07, 2021

System power failures, whether they are instantaneous or calculated in seconds and minutes, must be considered in the design process. If you want to deal with this type of situation, the common method is to use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to make up for these short downtime to ensure continuous operation of the system with high reliability. Therefore, many systems require backup power. Will a traditional super capacitor or a battery be selected as storage medium of this kind of backup power?

Capacitor technology plays an important role in circuit transmission and distribution applications. For example, the design of traditional film and oil-based capacitors can achieve multiple functions, including power factor correction and voltage balance. In the past 10 years, a lot of research and development have been carried out, which has made significant progress in the design and capacity of capacitors. This advanced capacitor is called a super capacitor. It is suitable for battery energy storage and backup power system. Although the energy storage of super capacitor is limited, its density is very high, and the super capacitor can quickly release high energy and has the ability of fast charging.

Supercapacitors are compact, robust and reliable, and can meet the requirements of the equipment power system as well as deal with short-term power loss occasions. Moreover, super capacitors can be stacked in parallel or in series, and can be combined in series and parallel to provide voltage and current for applications. Supercapacitors are capacitors with large capacitance. Compared with standard ceramic capacitors, tantalum capacitors or electrolytic capacitors, supercapacitors of the same size and weight have higher energy density and larger capacitance. Although supercapacitors require special maintenance, they can surpass and replace batteries in data storage applications that require high current/short-term backup power.

Compared with batteries, supercapacitors are smaller in size, able to provide higher burst peak power, and have more charging cycles and a wider working range. And supercapacitors are also used in a variety of high-peak and portable applications that require high burst currents or short-term battery backup, such as UPS system.

Why is it better to choose a super capacitor than a battery? The reason is that the battery can store a large amount of energy, but it has limitations in power density and transmission. Chemical reactions occur inside the battery, so the number of charging cycles is limited. Through the above statements, we can clearly know that supercapacitors are better than battery storage as medium.
