The Role of Supercapacitors in Automotive Starting

Jan. 26, 2024

Cold starting has always been a challenge for various types of engines, and external heating is currently a common method. However, the disadvantages are evident: long preparation time (requires preheating for nearly 1 hour), high system retrofitting costs, large volume, high cost per start, and some methods pose relatively high risks. The use of HCCCAP ESM modules can be widely applied in the battery enhancement starting field of various engines. It has the ability to provide 10 times the power output of an equally weighted battery and can start normally even at temperatures as low as -40°C. Additionally, it boasts a reliable lifespan of over 10 years, making it valuable in various applications, including emergency power generation systems for special vehicles, vehicles in low-temperature regions, and high-reliability cloud server emergency power systems.

Most engineering vehicles, military vehicles, anti-terrorism explosive-proof vehicles, etc., have specific requirements for operating environment temperatures, demanding strict conditions. Unlike batteries that generate and store energy through chemical reactions, supercapacitors store energy in an electric field. The electrostatic energy storage mechanism of supercapacitors allows them to complete charging and discharging in less than a second. They can operate normally within a wide temperature range of -40°C to +70°C, endure over a million charge-discharge cycles, and exhibit excellent resistance to vibration and shock.

The use of supercapacitors for vehicle starting mainly leverages the following two points:

Wide temperature range applicability: -40°C to 70°C, with outstanding low-temperature performance.

The Role of Supercapacitors in Automotive Starting

Excellent instantaneous power characteristics: Capable of releasing a large current instantly. When the temperature is very low, conventional vehicle batteries struggle to provide the large current required for starting, especially in northern regions where temperatures can fall below -20°C. Supercapacitors are well-suited to meet this instantaneous current demand in such applications.
